This is a new, low stress and fun way to introduce the competition side of the shooting sports to our membership. June 13th, 2020 was the first match with plans to hold one on the second Saturday of each month going forward.
What is steel challenge? In a nut shell, this is the arcade game of the shooting sports. There are 8 stages and we expect to shoot 4-5 of them each month. Each stage consist of 5 steel plates of varying size and distance. One of those plates is the stop plate and at the buzzer, you engage each plate with the stop plate completing your time. Targets are 10”, 12” and 18X24” plates, with most set from 7 to 15 yards. You will run through each stage five times and discard your slowest run. At the end of the match, the individual with the lowest time is the winner. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
All strings of fire start in a box and there is no movement or reload under the clock. At our level, you will have the option of drawing from the holster or starting from the low ready. Just about any firearm is an option, as long as it fires a pistol caliber (no magnums). Firearms range from full blown open guns to bone stock revolvers and pistol caliber carbines. This is a great sport for the kids as well. Nothing will put a bigger smile on their face quicker than ringing that steel. You’ll require a minimum of 125rounds and it is preferred to have 5 magazines.
We will be utilizing Practiscore and registration will start at 8:00 a.m. with shooting kicking off at 9:00. We have purchased tablets for each squad, to make score keeping accurate, fast and as easy as possible. Each stage will have its own separate wagon to make set up and tear down the fastest of any of the shooting sports. So come join us for some fast and fun shooting. If all goes smoothly, we should be cleaned up and headed home by noon.
